Our team has been working behind the scenes for the last two years to make sure that rigorous testing has been done so that our customers continue to experience the same full-bodied Rooibos espresso extraction that they have come to expect from red espresso®. Previous to that we have been waiting for the right technology to be able to make the claim that in fact our capsules are now home compostable.

Most of the compost capsules on the market are industrial compostable coffee/tea capsules, a mix of biobased fossil based material, with very poor quality in cup and almost no barrier to oxygen. Our capsule is the first to offer high barrier to oxygen to protect flavours and aromas, 100% biobased with no use of fossil resources and certified home compostable with disintegration within 26 weeks in a garden compost heap.

Our capsules are  made from renewable plant based materials, specifically fatty acids from plant oils which are converted into a biopolymer. They do not contain any fossil based materials (no materials derived from oil or gas). They have no PLA, no Aluminium, and no fossil plastic.

Our capsules are the first ever home compostable certified and 100% biobased Rooibos espresso capsule ensuring a perfect result in cup thanks to a barrier to oxygen level which has never been achieved before and a totally innovative compostable top lid.

We have launched our Original Rooibos Espresso capsules in the home compostable capsule format and the Rooibos Intenso and Vanilla Rooibos capsules to follow suit. We plan to move our Rooibos Chai and Caramel Rooibos capsules to the home compostable capsules in 2023.

Thanks to this top lid you obtain perfect extraction, great body and thick crema. The special top lid on the capsule has similar properties to the original aluminium lid, meaning the red espresso® Rooibos is brewed perfectly in the capsule machine. Home compostable does not mean that our capsules should be disposed anywhere in the natural environment. It is not a licence to litter. Our capsules break down in specific conditions in the presence of microorganisms. It is of upmost importance to inform consumers about end of life options. Information and education are key for a more sustainable world.

Greenwashing is everywhere and certification is a very efficient tool to fight false or misleading communication. Our credibility depends very much on our transparency. Our capsules are certified to disintegrate totally within 26 weeks at ambient temperature in a home compost heap.

If you do not have a home compost bin, they are simple and easy to purchase and set up. For whatever reason you are not able to do this, our capsules break down in a number of weeks if disposed of in a council-approved waste collection bin. The capsules can be used to create waste energy.
